The Black Lion

Here’s what our customers have to say about us

Hi Dean

Thanks for this positive and prompt response. We called in at the Black Lion on Sunday, we all had very pleasant meal, excellent local beer and were able to watch vintage trains steaming past. Since it was a sunny (yes it does say sunny) day we sat outside with our dog along with many other dog owners – all well behaved.
A very enjoyable day.

Best regards

Dear Dean,

My wife and I visited you earlier this week while on a canal boating holiday. We found the pub, the atmosphere and the food excellent. You mentioned that the pub was usually quiet on Thursdays, but we found it quite delightful. As you suggested I found your web site to leave this message. It is a very nice web site with some good pictures and comments, but there are quite a lot of grammatical and spelling errors, and typos. I have sent Paul a list of corrections that I noticed. Thank you for a lovely meal and I look forward to visiting you again when we are in the area, either by boat or on the canal.

Best Regards

Jason (and Kate),

We are the couple that Kate very kindly invited to your ‘New Year’ evening. Thanks, again, for allowing a couple of strangers (and Scousers as well!) to join the party, we had a great time. We were going to call in for an evening meal on our way home on the 1st but after we had eaten lunch at the Knockerdown Inn near sherbourne we just wanted to get home and chill. We will be stopping off at the Black Lion next time we are in the area – probably in the summer. Please let me have your email address so I can send the photo.

Best wishes

The genial host speaks very good English for a brummy. Beer excellent and reasonably priced. Evening meal was excellent value and large portions. Exceptional customer service offered to stricken canal boaters whose transmission failed. Best pub of the narrow boat holiday.

How nice to read the piece in waterways world and visit your web site. As a professional marine contractor I am of the rare breed that also enjoys busman’s holidays on the canal system. I and a group of friends have visited the Caldon twice the last time in 2007 when we headed for the pub at the end of a long days cruising with the hope of a good meal and pleasant evening. How wrong could we be. We were greeted by a very unpleasant chap in a empty pub with no food and it seemed that serving us drinks was a major disruption to his viewing of the tele at a ridiculous volume, needless to say we had one drink and left. The general consensus among the crew was what a terrible waste of such a great pub in a lovely setting so it is good to see that it is now being run as it should and when we are in the area we will be sure to visit.

Kind regards and good fortune.

We spent a week in a cottage about 10 minutes from your pub and enjoyed 3 lovely meals. There was 6 of us and a dog (Trixx) and we were all made to feel very welcome by the friendly staff. The meals were very reasonable price and large, I had a curry one night which was as good as having one from a curry house. The barmaid on the Tuesday 19th May and Thursday 21st May was extremely friendly and helpful.

Thank you very much!!

We came to your pub 2 weeks ago while on a canal boat holiday and we had a great meal, there were 8 of us and everyone said how lovely your food was and how big the portions were. Your staff are very friendly and helpful and your sticky toffee pudding, which you had just got in, was the best we have ever had !

We will be back whenever we are in the area and will recommend you to others.

I would like thank Jason and his cute staff for a cracking lunch (as usual) and good beer!! cheers. David.

Visited your excellent pub today with members of my family (including 1 year old Ruby) for lunch.  Brought back memories for some of my family, as they used to come 20 or more years ago, in their youth on bikes.  What a great find, we did take a few wrong turns mind,, But so glad we did eventually find you in the end. Had lunch, which was delicious, went on the steam train and even took home some of the gift pack beers.  We will certainly return, in the very near future, possibly on one of your evenings as they sound like a good night out.  Hoping to introduce even more members of family very soon. (Yes I did travel all that way, but would do it again, without a doubt, will highly recommend you).

We were the boaters on Sunday 13th September 2009 trying to get a taxi back to our car in Stone, which was successfully achieved thanks to your help. The food was excellent, sorry we didn’t perhaps do it justice as the portion was too much for us, the beer St Austell Proper Job, scored a 5 (on a scale of zero to five) from all 3 of us, so the cellar work is spot on, and everyone was helpful and friendly. The wifi mean’t Steve could keep his blog going on his 10 week odyssey around the system. We’ll come by car next time and will always call when passing on a boat. Thanks again,Mike and Maggie (by car) and Steve (staying on the boat).

We live in Kingsley and often walk down for a drink with the dogs. We are really pleased to see the place improve each time we come. The place and the welcome has come a long way from the
previous owners!!Just wanted to send you a link to a nice photo from the
Staffs archives, just go onto and search consall.

Boy didn’t it snow!  We were the group who came to your pub on Saturday, we sat there enjoying a lovely lunch looking out of the window and commenting on how beautiful the scenery was with all the snow falling.  We paid for it later when we decided to get in our cars and go home, we were snowed in and couldn’t get up the hill!  Hours it took for us to push the cars up there but we all mucked in and got on with it.  A couple of your neighbours helped us out – to be honest if they didn’t we would still be with you!  If you know the gentleman with the red 4×4 (landrover) who lives in a cottage down there and also the lovely guy with the long black hair who both helped us so much then can you say a very big thank you to them.  We didn’t get their names but we are so thankful for all their help.  Hope you got some pictures of the snowy scene as they would look lovely on your web site. We will come to see you again when it stops snowing – we will wait till August I think, just to be sure!

regards,Stella (finally back in Southampton)

I have been reading about the Black Lion on the internet and wish to congratulate your team on its success. It’s nice to see hard work paying off. You are a little too far away (at present) for us to supply you with the odd guest beer, but we hope to hear from you when you decide to stage your next festival. Please reply and I’ll send you our range of beers.

Hi,We have just returned home having stayed at The Flint Mill just down the canal for a long weekend to celebrate my 40th birthday. Just wanted to thank you again for helping to make the occasion what it was. Fabulous pub in all ways. Great beer and cider, good food, great atmosphere and really friendly people.  It’s the first time I’ve been frowned at in a pub for taking my muddy walking boots off!  Thanks

Lisa and friends

P.S. The beer wound from tripping over the railway points is healing nicely!

Just to say thanks for a good night at the acoustic session on Tuesday – I’m the guy who gave you the CD – STILL – which you were playing as I left. Hope you are enjoying it! If you ever think of an occasion when we might go down well, it’d be great if you can contact me either on the above email address, or through my web site where you can find out more. Anyway  – I’ll be down for a pint and a bite to eat soon.

Dear Ben, Jason and all the staff

Thank you for making our holiday that extra special.  Wonderful food, hospitality and friendliness. We all hope to visit again in the future. Thanks very much to you all.

With happy memories Gillian, John and Jonathan Hodgson (and Christina and Tim Naughton)

Thanks for your help last night, when we arrived by boat to your lovely pub, needing help with moorings and taxi to pick the car up.

We look forward to sampling more of your great beers and food later in the week. It was like a mirage seeing the Black Lion at the end of a long dry run!

We had a great day with you today.
Having visited Consall Scout Camp we checked the internet for a nearby venue to have lunch and catch up. We were astounded to find the Black Lion at Consall Forge!
Truly amazing, the glorious setting is matched only by the standards of service, food & ale!

I recently visited your pub and was really impressed with the large variety of real ales and ciders on offer. Me my girlfriend had a lovely meal and the hospitality was really warming. Also you are a dog friendly pub which makes all the difference.

Regards Dave Devlin (Thank You Very Much)

I don’t usually do this but i had to write and tell you how impressed i am with your pub. I stumbled across your web page after trying find a nice country pub that does home cooked food. The area is so beautiful, the building itself and surroundings are from a different era. The food was amazing and the staff were lovely. I loved watching the trains go past as we ate lunch and you get so much quality food for what you pay.

Thank you for a lovely experience and will will see you again soon!
